What is Read with Me?
Read with Me was started in 2004, and brings volunteers from eleven sponsoring churches to fifteen different schools that serve disadvantaged students, to help them develop to their maximum potential. Our primary effort is to provide English speaking role models for children who are in need of individual assistance in learning to become fluent in English.
This last year, we had over 400 volunteers serving 15 schools throughout the Coachella Valley. Over the last 10 years, research has indicated that if a child is not reading at grade level by 3rd grade, he or she will drop out of school. READING is basic to all learning and is the building block that must be in place to continue to learn and succeed.

Kathy Coplen is coordinator for Oasis Elementary School in Thermal.
Our volunteer time and shuttles run from first week in November until last week in April. We meet at the La Quinta Costco at 8:15; shuttle leaves at 8:30 and we are at the school from 9 a.m. until 11 am.
After brief orientation volunteers choose their day or days to volunteer. Under the guidance of the classroom teacher we work one on one or in small groups to improve the student’s fluency, comprehension and pronunciation of our English language. If you enjoy reading, are fluent in English, like children, and are willing to commit 2 or 3 hours a week during the school year, please contact Kathy Coplen at [email protected].
