Peace & Justice Ministries
Our Baptismal Covenant:
“We will strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being.”
The Peace & Justice Ministry Team is excitedly looking forward to a new year with lots of challenges and opportunities —economically, socially, culturally, morally, spiritually and ethically - for all of us at Saint Margaret’s! In today’s times, we, like all church ministries, are boldly confronted with new challenges in social justice. In the words of Bishop Curry, “Hope doesn’t just accept the way things are—it dares to hope and believe that something can be different, and then works to make it happen.”
The Peace & Justice Ministry calls us to do the work that embodies our baptismal promise. We believe that treating others differently based on their skin color, their religious affiliation, their gender orientation, their disabilities, their country of birth, or any other exclusions is discriminatory, disrespectful, and denies Jesus’ example.
Immigration & Migrant Support
Addressing immigration issues and migrant support in collaboration with Border Compassion. The mission of Border Compassion is to invite faith-communities to Cross-Over at the border to offer a compassionate humanitarian response to families living at the Posada del Migrante Shelter, which houses up to 300 people.
Voices for Peace in the Holy Land
Learn why Christians, Muslims, and Jews in the Holy Land are calling us to take an active role in pursuing peace and justice. Explore how our baptismal vows to “respect the dignity of every human being” remains our chief goal in our advocacy for all God’s children. The ministry includes monthly meetings, events, speakers, movies, interfaith discussion, and fundraising. Contact Melissa Yarbray at [email protected] or Vivianne Fernquist at [email protected]
Living Without Fear
The Living Without Fear Ministry was founded in 2015 in response to mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School and Mother Emanuel AME Church. The mission of the Living Without Fear Ministry at Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church is to bring God's love to the world by:
Sacred Ground
Sacred Ground is a film and readings-based dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. The 11 part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories. Its aims to create collaborative involvement across the various communities in building restorative justice practices, lifting awareness of the dignity of indigenous tribes, support asylum seekers, and involve more people in the crises of social justice throughout the world. More information.
Neighbors of the Cahuilla
In January of 2022, a small group of St. Margaret’s parishioners came together to educate ourselves to the scope of indigenous tribes we are living among here in the Valley. Since the majority of the local eight bands of Indians are of Cahuilla lineage, we are calling ourselves Neighbors of the Cahuilla. Our ministry here at St. Margaret’s will be learning how we can become conscious neighbors to our local tribes and grow into allies. This learning experience is part of the challenge of this new ministry. St. Margaret’s will be participating in this indigenous awareness within a larger framework of institutional transformation.
