Solidarity with Immigrants & Refugees

OUR STORY
In 2019, St. Margaret’s launched Desert Support for Asylum Seekers, a ministry assisting immigrants seeking a better life in the U.S. Its original mission was to help detainees released from Federal Detention Centers in California by finding them shelter and transportation to their sponsors. As the ministry grew, our focus shifted to supporting immigrants and asylum seekers entering the U.S. legally at our Southern border. Partnering with the Roman Catholic Sisters of St. Joseph, we became Border Compassion and began working with La Posada del Migrantes in Mexicali, MX. Our work soon included regular visits to La Posada, where we met migrants, learned their stories, and provided food, clothing, and legal aid. It was a time of welcome and support! In 2025, major political, social, cultural, and legal changes led to the expansion of St. Margaret’s immigration ministry. The flow of migrants entering the U.S. has slowed and nearly stopped. Additionally, current U.S. policies, involving armed military forces, aim to deport thousands of immigrants, most of whom have been living productive lives here and now live with fear and uncertainty. St. Margaret’s responded to these changes by expanding its support network for immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees to include a new ministry, Solidarity with Immigrants and Refugees (SIR), supporting immigrants already in the United States. |
