Rector Search: The Task
The process began with the resignation of our Rector of nine years, the Reverend Dr. Robert Certain, in January of 2007. The Reverend Dr. Roger Douglas joined us as interim Rector in May 2007, to help with the transition while we began the process of calling a new rector. Throughout the summer months our mission statement and strategic plans were developed by the Vestry using information from parish surveys. The Vestry selected members for a Calling Committee - representative of the parish community - and in September 2007, our committee held its first meeting. The Calling Committee was directed to bring a single final candidate to the Vestry for approval.

In the next eight months a Parish Profile was completed, a list of qualified candidates was compiled, and preparations were being made for telephone interviews. While Fr. Douglas and the vestry worked on solutions to a growing budget deficit, the national economy worsened, and a decision was made to suspend the Call until such time as a plan could be implemented to stabilize the budget.

Ten months later, with significant progress made toward a balanced budget and debt reduction, the Calling Committee was instructed to resume its task of calling a rector.

In May 2009 the Calling Committee resumed its work with a reduced list of candidates, and the final stages of interviews and church visits began to take shape. Three candidates participated in this final process and in July a single candidate was presented to, and approved by, the Vestry. The selected candidate declined the Call, however, citing a pending Call to a Bishopric in another Diocese.

Fr. Roger Douglas' term as interim rector was completed in August and a new interim arrived in September. The Reverend Dr. George Martin brings forty years of experience to St. Margaret's as we begin the next phase of our Call.

As of September 2009, the Calling Committee has updated the Parish Profile and has begun compiling a new list of candidates and nominees as we begin our Call anew. We continue our service with the following prayer:

"Almighty God, giver of every good gift: look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of us, your servants, as you call a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen."
