Where to Eat (Rector’s Favorites)

Some recommended restaurants while you’re in the desert:

  • Adobe Grill at La Quinta Resort (La Quinta, lunch/dinner). Better at night, but it’s a cool place either way.
  • Cuistot (Palm Desert, lunch/dinner). French, but very accessible and comfortable. $$$$. Gotta have the mushroom soup. Trust me. Ask about the Box Lunch special.
  • Desert Willow Clubhouse Grill (Palm Desert, lunch). Better at lunch because it’s all about the view, which is amazing (mountains and golf course).
  • Don and Sweet Sue’s (Cathedral City, breakfast/lunch/dinner). Basically a diner. But good.
  • El Paseo Grill: (Palm Desert, breakfast/lunch) Burger place. Extremely casual. Lunch is much better than breakfast. I love it. Try the Dirty Frenchman hamburger, and the jalapeno poppers.
  • Fresh Agave (Palm Desert, lunch/dinner, Mexican). Excellent.
  • Jackalope Ranch (Indio, lunch/dinner). Probably better for dinner only. Not a great restaurant, but a very fun venue.
  • La Brasserie (La Quinta, French bistro).
  • Las Casuela’s (Various, lunch/dinner, Mexican). Several places in the desert with the same name. All connected by family, but not different branches of the same restaurant. They’re all good, but the best probably is in Palm Springs.
  • Lord Fletcher’s (Rancho Mirage, dinner). Old English Pub style. Owned by parishioners. Incredible prime rib. Reviewed favorably by Anthony Bordain. Frank Sinatra favorite. Totally worth it.
  • Lulu’s. (Palm Springs, lunch/dinner) Great.
  • Mario’s Italian Café. (Various, lunch/dinner) Local chain of extremely casual places. GPS it for closest location. Lunch specials. $5 glass of wine, softball size.
  • Pacifica (Palm Desert, lunch/dinner, seafood). Try to sit outside if you can.
  • Purple Palms Café. (Palm Springs, lunch/dinner) Very Palm Springs. Small place.
  • Rick’s (Palm Springs, lunch/dinner, Cuban). Excellent.
  • Si Bon (Rancho Mirage, lunch/dinner or late breakfast). Belgian. Excellent.
  • Tommy Bahama (Palm Desert, lunch/dinner). Just down from Pacifica. I like this a lot; Becky less so. Try the plantains and the key lime pie.
  • Trio. Great modernist Palm Springs place.
  • Tyler’s (Burgers). (Palm Springs, lunch/dinner) Free standing in the middle of a parking lot in downtown Palm Springs. Extremely casual.
  • Vue Grille and Bar (Indian Wells, lunch/dinner). Same idea as Desert Willow above. Indian Wells Country Club.
  • Wilma and Frieda (Palm Desert, breakfast). Amazing breakfast.
  • Wolfgang Puck (Palm Desert, lunch/dinner). If you like that kind of thing. It’s very popular, but I’m not a big fan.
  • Zinn American Bistro (Palm Springs, lunch/dinner)
