Helping Children Deal with Loss
Parish Nurse Program
St. Margaret's Church has had a Parish Nurse program in place since 2000. Parish nursing is a unique, specialized practice of professional nursing that focuses on the promotion of health within the context of the values, beliefs and practices of a faith community. Health is viewed not only as the absence of disease but also as a sense of physical, social, psychological and spiritual well-being, and a sense of being in harmony with self, others, the environment and God. Professional nursing is rooted in these concepts of health and healing. Parish nursing integrates current medical and behavioral knowledge with the beliefs and practices of the faith community to promote health as wholeness and to prevent or minimize illness.
The Parish Nurse, Kate Reeves, has written a number of articles for the View. Some of the newer ones are available as PDFs and the older articles may be viewed as web pages.

UCSB / Osher - Continuing Education
It does not matter if you are 16 to 30 or 50 to 80 years old; all of us continue to learn. There are a great number of sources to learn and grow open to those who are willing to study and learn more about our environment or about ourselves. This page will list one such source here in the Coachella Valley that is very economical. The Osher Institute classes are open to all for a nominal fee which allows one to take up to four classes per semester.
To quote the web site: The Institute offers non-credit, six-week university level courses for mature adults interested in the intellectual challenge of academic subjects without the stress of grades, tests or homework.

The next session of classes will be in the Fall of 2006..
Leticia Quezada is the director of the campus program; the web site lists her E-mail address and phone numbers if you have any questions. This is a great resource for our valley; please avail yourselves of this service.

What is a Life Coach?
By Dr. Betty Baxter
A Life Coach is a trained professional who inspires and guides
individuals to clarify what has meaning for them and what they want to
accomplish. A Life Coach helps people to move forward by setting
goals, taking actions, overcoming obstacles and achieving success.
Is this like therapy or counseling?
Distinct from traditional analysis or therapy, which deals with history and unresolved issues, coaching focuses on the present and future. Coaching is forward-looking, action-oriented, affordable, and convenient, because coaching can be done over the telephone from any location in the world. Imagine! You can change your life and follow your dream without leaving your home or office.
Who hires a Life Coach and Why?
Coaches work with clients of all ages and areas. Some are contemplating or experiencing a major transition; others are seeking balance in their work, family, and personal lives; some want to experience new levels of effectiveness and satisfaction, and all want to accomplish more of the things that really matter to them. Coaching can help anyone who is willing to investigate, experiment, and be open to new possibilities.
How does it work?
- The coach sees you as a hero who has inherent capabilities, resourcefulness and strengths.
- The coach asks questions that help you see what has true meaning for you and what you want to accomplish.
- The coach creates a trusting, confidential relationship and is there to support you with ideas, suggestions, and strategies so you can move past obstacles you've experienced in the past.
- The coach helps you set SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based) goals to achieve your intentions, then guides you to develop and take the authentic actions (small, sweet steps) to reach those goals.
- Coaching sessions usually are scheduled 30 to 45 minutes per week and are done on the telephone from the location of your choice, with e-mail and fax contacts encouraged and welcomed between sessions.
Is coaching right for you?
- Do you have an unfulfilled dream or goal?
- Is your life in transition?
- Are you struggling to define who you are, what you want, and what you need to do to fulfill your goals?
- Is your job all-consuming? Is your identity and self-worth tied up in your job?
- Do you need help prioritizing and balancing personal and professional demands?
- Do you grapple with self-doubt about your leadership abilities?
- Do you have difficulty remaining focused and productive?
- Are you feeling overwhelmed with the demands of parenting and its expectations?
- Is your self-worth tied up in your child(ren)’s success?
- Do you wish you could organize your retirement life to get the most out of it?
- Do you wish you had a purpose to get up every morning?
- Do you wish you had a knowledgeable, objective, non-judgmental person to talk with on a regular basis by telephone?
It is really difficult to put into words the synergy and benefits that
come from working with a Life Coach. The best way to find out what
coaching can do for you is to actually try it. Additional
information is available on the International Coach Federation website
