The sixth Season of Desert Friends of Music at St. Margaret’s kicks off with a concert by this exciting brass quintet.  Returning to the desert after a sold-out performance at the McCallum Theatre earlier this year, the Canadian Brass will perform a varied program in the unique acoustical setting at St. Margaret’s.  The group, now in its 34th season, has a long history of performing and recording classical repertoire with more than 60 recordings to date.

TRIO WEST

Trio West, a dynamic young piano trio, was called “stunning” by The Santa Barbara Independent, which also stated that “they would have bowled us over [with] whatever they played.” 

All three players are graduates of the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where they began playing together as a trio in the summer of 2004 at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California.  The Trio focuses on both classical and new music repertoire as well as educational outreach to schools and children’s venues. 

Future concert appearances include Italy, Paris and New York.

RYAN MacEVOY McCULLOUGH, PIANIST

This young 18 year old virtuoso pianist returns to Palm Desert after his remarkable performances at the Virginia Waring piano competition earlier this year that earned him a winning position in a very strong field of contestants. 

Ryan McCullough began studying the piano at the age of 5 and composition at the age of 13.  He has participated in a number of international piano competitions and is a frequent soloist, both nationally and internationally, with various orchestras as well as serving as accompanist for many instrumentalists and vocal groups. 

This is a great opportunity to hear an outstanding young performer at the beginning of what promises to be a great career.

CHANTICLEER

After last year’s sold-out performance, Chanticleer returns to St. Margaret’s. 

Praised by the New York Times for its “precise, pure and deeply felt singing,” this GRAMMY Award-winning vocal ensemble brings its remarkable reputation for vivid interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz and from gospel to adventuresome new music, to St. Margaret’s for an evening of incredible choral music.

 With its seamless blend of twelve male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as “an orchestra of voices.”

FREDERICK SWANN, OrganistFred Swann 2005

Now in his fifth season as Organ Artist-in-Residence at St. Margaret’s Church, this internationally acclaimed organist will thrill you with dazzling technique and artistry.  He is in his second term as National President of the 20,000 member American Guild of Organists and continues to give concerts on a limited schedule in the United States and abroad. 

Always a hit with audiences, Frederick Swann plays music you want to hear!  In addition to his virtuosity you will also enjoy his witty commentaries.

A FESTIVAL OF LESSONS AND CAROLS FOR CHRISTMAS – featuring the choirs and orchestra of St. Margaret’s Church, this service will include a wide variety of music for the Christmas season.  Always a popular event, early arrival is suggested for this event.

 

 

 


2 JAZZ MASSES

THE SIDE STREET STRUTTERS JAZZ BAND - The traditional Mardi Gras weekend at St. Margaret's will again feature the incredible jazz sounds of this fine group. "The Side Street Strutters play regularly at Disneyland , but there is nothing Mickey Mouse about them. These guys are Good!" - The Long Beach Gazette. 

Beginning with the rich musical heritage of Old New Orleans , the band also pays tribute to the great Big Bands of the 1930's and 1940's.

These Jazz Masses are generously funded by gifts to the Designated Music Fund by Patti McDonald Chandler and Lucy Karns.  We thank them for this wonderful gift.
