Webmaster's Note: Bishop Mathes has given permission to print his notes to the clergy of his diocese. The Bishop writes regularly to his clergy in order to inform, to teach, to share his joys and sorrows, and to encourage the clergy to likewise share with him. We are grateful to Bishop Mathes for allowing us to share these notes with you.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I have just returned from my former parish, St. James the Less in Northfield, Illinois, where we celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the parish's founding. It was wonderful to be with old friends. In many of the conversations, I was humbled to realize the difference that simple acts of ministry make in the lives of those that we serve. Too often we are so busy that we do not realize these moments of grace. We fail to acknowledge and thank people who give us a gift of ministry and Jesus' presence.
We also fail to hear the same word when it is spoken to us.
It is in that spirit that I share with you my immense gratitude for our recent Clergy Conference. Michael Battle was a treasure to each of us giving us new ways to think of the ministry of reconciliation. I also believe that his gentle spirit and his Christ-centered witness were great blessings. Without diminishing Michael's offering to us, I must say that our Eucharist and prayers of healing were transformational for me. I felt your love and care in healing in your prayers for me.
Michael is right. The presence of the Holy Spirit is found when there is unity and diversity.
The Holy Spirit was with us.
Faithfully,
The Rt. Rev. James
R. Mathes
Bishop
