A
Poem by Braxton Brown & Peggy Smith
Let’s grow old together...
beginning with today.
Let’s work slowly with each other and build a relationship that
we can both enjoy being a part of.
Let’s share love and understand that neither of us is perfect;
we are both subject to human frailties.
Let’s hold each other close and whisper through the
night--pledging our love, honoring our commitment.
Let’s encourage each other to pursue our dreams, even when we’re
weary from trying.
Let’s expect the best that we both have to give and still love
when we fall short of our expectations.
Let’s be friends and respect each other’s individual personality
and give one another room to grow.
Let’s be candid with each other and point out strengths and
weaknesses.
Let’s understand each other’s personal philosophy, even if we
don’t agree.
Let’s lie awake long into the night sharing our innermost
secrets.
Let’s be friends as well as lovers.
Let’s laugh at time and plan with each other and wonder how we
ever got along without this love we’ve found.
Let’s never take for granted these moments that we’ve shared,
but always be reminded of how intensely we have learned to live,
how completely we have learned to love.
Let’s grow old together...
and look back on life and smile.

On May 31, 2008 Alex Siele and Stacy
Kend were married. In the ceremony they chose to share this poem
with family and friends.
Clearly it gives words to the hope of
their hearts, to the purpose of their seeking God's blessing and
the support of their families and friends. In this sacred moment
of their lives they shared with us a dream for their future
together.
I share it with you by way of
invitation: can you remember the hope with which you began your
marriage? Can you remember the love and the power of that love
expressed in your marriage vow? Can you remember the joy of the
moment (even if everything you had planned was turning out less
perfect than you wanted)? Can you remember the energy of the
day? Can you remember inviting God's grace into your new life
together?
What poetry or music or scripture did
you choose to express your hopes and dreams? What poetry or
music or scripture or prayer set a course for you to follow? Are
you on course?
Take a moment to remember, to be
renewed, to recover the joy and hope of that moment in time when
you spoke your promises as you began and celebrated your
marriage.
Let us pray:
May your covenant with each other be
life-giving and life-long, enriched by God's presence and
strengthened by God's grace; may you bring comfort and
confidence to each other in faithfulness and trust; may joy and
delight fill your waking, your working, your play and your rest
as you grow together in love.
