Love

The beginning of love is to let those
we love be perfectly themselves, and not
to twist them to fit our own image.
Otherwise we love only the reflection of
ourselves we find in them.

Thomas Merton quoted in Synthesis, April 22, 2007

Try this out for a day or a week. Can you let the one you love "be perfectly himself / herself"? What is the biggest challenge? What is easily done? Does it make a difference? Do you have to exercise a lot of will power to accomplish this? Does it come easily and naturally?

What does it mean to let another be perfectly himself / herself?

How is it that love can draw out the "best" from another while at the same time allowing the other to be "perfectly himself / herself"?

I have more questions than answers this week.

And I know that asking the questions, seeking the answers, putting energy into the relationship born in marriage is worth the effort and blessed by God.

Rejoice in God's blessing as you ask your questions and listen for answers. Rejoice in God's blessing as you allow the love within your relationship to grow richer and stronger with each new experience and each new day.
