The Journey Home - Make It A Good One
“Brad Hall, the Cyclist”
“One of my first and most important memories of Brad is as a cyclist. When he came to seminary, he was anxious to continue his physical exercise program, which in the Navy had included a long commute by bicycle. Unfortunately for Brad, he lived only five hundred yards from campus, so bicycle commuting was not an option. But he looked to the hills of Berkeley and soon knew he had all the riding opportunities be needed. Now Brad needed companions: sometimes students from CDSP, sometimes students from other seminaries.
“I remember he met one of his bicycling buddies by identifying the logo on a special belt buckle and knowing only a cyclist would ever wear such a belt! Brad had an amazing ability to be sensitive to the world around him as he looked for special things he needed and wanted, whether that was a cycling partner or a sermon illustration or....
“Brad and I took many trips together on our bikes. When I returned from England with a special bike, he helped me put it together. When he fell on a trip and gashed his leg, I got to do the shopping for bandages, with my bicycle in tow, in a fancy mall drugstore! Cycling for Brad was for exercise, camaraderie, getting perspective on his studies and the rest of his life, for being in new places. He believed he was a better student for all of this, and I have no doubt he was right.
“But for me, as I look back on those days and remember, as I continue to go to the coffee shop and bakery where we would stop after our rides and talk, for me Brad’s love for cycling was something which enriched my life and the lives of many others. For that, and so much more, I am grateful.”
